The Pan American Championships brought slalom kayaking’s top athletes to the Kananaskis River. The competition was fierce and after 3 days of competition, we had new Pan Am champions. In the K1W category, Jessica Groenveld, in K1 David Ford, in C1 James Cartwright, in C2 Ben Hayward and Cam Smedley, and in C1W Cindy Audet. A true Canadian sweep. Our new female national champion in junior and in senior is Jazmyn Denhollander.

I raced in 2 categories, K1W and C1W. I raced well in my C1 run but had 1 fifty. My K1W run was no good. I decided not to do a 2nd C1 run and focus on my kayak run. I pulled together a better run and finished in 3rd place.
Our team run was so much fun and we finished in 1st place. Alberta tied with Ontario for the Brian Creer Cup. Points are awarded to athletes from each province depending on how they do and are all tabulated at the end of nationals week. It’s pretty incredible that with all the events in nationals that Alberta and Ontario tied.
I’ve heard rumours that Nationals will be in Ontario next summer either at Minden or at the Pumphouse. See you next year!
