The Huskies celebrate during Coy Cup finals action at Takhini Arena on April 1, 2017. The Huskies won the Coy Cup 7-5.

In October we found out that Whitehorse would be hosting the Coy Cup, BC Hockey’s Senior Men’s AA Championship. For the local men’s Senior AA team, The Whitehorse Huskies, which started three season ago, it meant lots of time preparing on the ice and in the gym. For me, it would mean a lot of nights spent at the local arena and drinking, breathing, shooting, living hockey during the six days the tournament was on.

The Huskies were a favourite heading into the tournament, but that didn’t mean it would be an easy road to the final. They were joined by the North Island Capitals, the Kelowna Sparta (a new team and new to the league) and the Terrace River Kings (Coy Cup runner-ups over the last three years).

As the week progressed, I felt more and more comfortable at the arena, finding the clear spots in the glass to shoot through and navigating rowdy spectators when I wanted to shoot through the netting. I also gained confidence shooting the game and then rushing to the dressing room hallway to get post-game interviews and writing up the story for the next afternoon’s paper.

Here are some scenes from the week:
